Restaurant Refurbishment

7 July 2016

Here at the Design House, we are as busy as ever working with clients creating beautiful interiors whilst also working on a project that is a little closer to home, the redesign of our own Market House Restaurant. As some of our regular customers may be aware from being in and out, work has been ongoing and we are happy to say that we are nearly at completion.

Any new design project can be a daunting task, so we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you the journey and break the project down to give you ideas of where to start and how our design team can help you create your own interiors.
For us in Alexanders it has very much been a group effort, with everyone involved from the owners, staff, passers by and our regular customers.
We discussed together and set out our objectives so it was clear what we wanted to achieve with the redesign and so the process then began with gathering ideas and inspiration, putting together schemes and evolving designs.

Some more 'messy' work had to be done before the redecoration could start, some re plastering took place, and the floor was entirely sanded and brought back to its original colour over the Easter holidays. A fault in the floor was fixed by adding a supporting beam after trading hours and a new seating area was rebuilt to allow us more tables. Constant and continued communication with our trusted architect and team of tradesmen allowed this all to be planned and co ordinated with as little inconvenience to our customers as possible.  Not to say we have not had a few hiccups along the way but when dealing with a building nearly 200 years old, unexpected problems can arise.

We transformed the seating area with a new layout to allow us to cater for more customers during busy lunch times. Previous banisters where replaced with stylish panelling to create a more private dining area. The floor was re-sanded and varnished to freshen up the space. Problem plaster was chipped back and redone (a few times) but we got there in the end. New tables and chairs were also chosen for our raised seating area which is now perfect for our Afternoon Tea Service.

A softer more contemporary colour scheme was one of our main objectives within the redesign to brighten up the Market House Restaurant and give it a modern country feel. Many pattern books, collections and samples were researched in our extensive fabric library, as soft furnishings are our speciality, and with two windows to dress, patio doors to curtain and soft upholstery to be redone, they create the biggest impact within our restaurant. It took us some time and much deliberation but when we found this scheme one afternoon everyone was in agreement that it was perfect.

With this chosen we began experimenting with the paint colours, taking time to test the colours in various areas to see how light and shade would affect them and the changing conditions outside. This is important and should not be rushed, paint colours should always be the last thing chosen, with so many tints and shades available you will always get your colour. We are suppliers of Zoffany and Designers Guild paint at the Design House and have used it throughout the Market House Restaurant and the shop. Its quality is superior and both have a fabulous colour range/pallet.

With all elements chosen, attention to the detail of the curtain designs and upholstery style then took place. Deep buttoning was chosen for the top section to give a more formal look to the upholstery and complement the new chairs for the Afternoon Tea area. The lower section was kept more informal with the original seat pads on the chairs updated to coordinate. Trimmings and tiebacks were selected, designs drawn up for curtains and pelmets to be made, striking poles chosen, and custom blinds finished off the window designs. We have added some quirky details with the wallpaper and new custom made scatter cushions are on the way to add comfort to the upholstered seating areas.

With some lighting to add, shelving to design and accessories to introduce to finish off the scheme we hope that you call in, have a coffee and enjoy the new surroundings of our Market House Restaurant.
